‘Copyrighted intellectual property lies at the heart of what we do. Without this protection we would not be able to invest in future technological developments’

Helen Kogan, MD, Kogan Page Ltd

Every year, 120,000 new books are published in the UK. Publishing in the UK is the largest media sector, and the biggest creative industry. Book, journal and electronic publishing contribute over £5 billion to the domestic economy and the value of UK book exports is higher than the export turnover of any other creative industry.

From multi-national businesses to specialist academic publishers and small independents, the UK publishing sector directly and indirectly employs more than 236,000 people and is one of the most diverse in the world.

Founded in 1967, Kogan Page Ltd (KP) is one of Europe’s leading independent business book publishers and a major force in international business publishing. Their list currently comprises about 1,200 titles (including electronic product). Exports now account for approximately 40% of KP’s revenue, and they have offices in New Delhi and the US. Over 300 KP titles are in translation, with the largest foreign rights market being Brazil, followed closely by China.

KP have also developed an innovative approach to enhanced e-books via apps such as the critically acclaimed, award winning, 'Bold' app (pictured). Such innovation means that KP books are now sold as e-books through all the main channels.

‘The ability to develop intellectual property across a range of platforms and formats is critical to our business. Whether sold as print, e-books, digital or translation rights, or developed as audio books or apps; copyrighted intellectual property lies at the heart of what we do. Without this protection we would not be able to invest in future technological developments, in the skills-base of our workforce, or operate successfully as a global publisher developing product for a worldwide market.’ Helen Kogan, MD of Kogan Page
